CX4 & CX5 Tail Wheel Spring Mount - Recommended Modification

It was reported on February 26, 2015 that during a routine condition inspection of a CX4 with 485 hours of rough sod field operation, cracks were found on the F12 bulkhead where the tail wheel bracket attaches. After investigation, cracks were found on the F12 bulkhead and lower skin due to a rocking action of the 3/16 x 1-1/2 mount angle for the tail wheel spring. It is our recommendation to remove the angle and replace with the bracket shown in this advisory.

    CX4 & CX5 Tri-gear Nose Strut & Wheel Fork - Recommended Modification.

The Belleville washer stack under the front wheel fork can loose it's preload if the washers become impregnated with oil. With this loss of preload, a severe shimmy during taxi can occur and the fork could rotate 360 and enter the prop arc. To prevent this extreme rotation, a wheel stop can be incorporated into the nose gear to limit the front fork/wheel rotation to 45 left and 45 right of center.

CX4 Rudder Cable Replacement - Mandatory Modification.

After 180 hours, the CX4 left rudder teleflex cable broke at the tail end. It broke during a taxi. It appears that the constant moving back and forth at the flexible joint caused the strands to work harden and break. I am advising everyone to remove the teleflex cables and replace with 7x19 1/8" stainless aircraft cable.

Do not use auto fuel with alcohol in it.
Alcohol will vaporize at 145 to 150 degrees F. This will cause a bubble in the fuel system forward of the firewall, When this bubble reaches the carburetor the engine will have no fuel and will loose power for a moment then run again until the next bubble comes along. The alcohol might swell the rubber in the fuel system or carburetor as well.

  • A tri-gear version of the CX4 is now available. The conversion plans with the manual is $65.00. A photo of the tri-gear aircraft can be seen in the photos section of this web site.

  • A newly designed rudder pedal that is floor mounted is available for those who want it. Ask for new sheet 5. The prefabricated pedals are $200. Photos can be seen on the Yahoo group site.

An improved sheet 4, with changes to the stabilizer tip rib and middle rib is now being sent out to all plans holders.

  • Corrections to Sheet 3: The lower rudder rib should be 27" not 30". The rudder spar flange should face aft. The end view of the rudder spar drawing ( lower end) shows it facing forward, which is a mistake on the drawing.

In order for the elevator to reach 22 degrees up travel the stabilizer should be set to 2 3/4" from F12 bulkhead not 2 3/8" as currently shown on sheet 4. This problem is due to the elevator horn not being welded the same on all planes.

The 8" rod going from the brake arm on the rudder pedal to the brake master cylinder should be increased to 8 1/4" Reference sheet 5. The rudder pedal and brake arm can be brazed to the 5/8" tube instead of welding, if you wish.
